‘Web usability’ for an easy-to-use web site

The World Wide Web is all about providing people with information. Web usability is all about getting them to the information relevant to them as quickly and as easily as possible.

There are obvious commercial advantages in developing a usable web site. This guide helps you to design such a site, based on what your customers actually need, not what you think they need.

The techniques for creating a usable web site are based on two key principles:

  • Clearly define your own goals for the web site.
  • Understand who will be using your web site and what they want from it.

Once you know what both you and your users want from your web site, you can start to make it more usable. There is no substitute for actually seeing people use the site, and every web site owner should try to carry out at least some ‘user testing’.
