Making existing sites more accessible

If you already have a web site, you are probably wondering how to make it more accessible, in line with current legislation.

To achieve the minimum level of compliance (Level A) may not be too difficult or expensive. The first step is to give your site a thorough check-up and look for potential problems with graphics, colours, tables, audio, frames and forms. (If you are unsure of the technicalities, ask your web designer about accessibility.)

Check the navigation on your web site, too. Have you tried navigating through your existing web site using just the keyboard? Have you looked at it on different browsers?

Try submitting your home page to one of the online tools for checking your site’s accessibility, like ‘Bobby’ or ‘Cynthia Says’, and reading the details in the automatically generated report.

Achieving the highest level of compliance (Level AAA) is much more challenging, and can be a time-consuming job. It is easier to reach this level when you are designing a new site, than to redesign an existing site.
